Summary

Maya Delaney's paw-print birthmark is the mark of what she truly is -a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly everyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it's only a matter of time before she's able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home.

Review

Plot: While the first series in this story (Darkest Powers) was about Project Genesis, this is about Project Phoenix. While Genesis was to make supernaturals more powerful, Phoenix is bringing back supernaturals who were no longer existent. While in the first series, the kids were trying to escape, in this one, the teens have already escaped and are trying to make it back to their parents. The whole book is a mix of suspense, adventure, and romance without any of the other being too overwhelming. While there is some romance, the plot line isn't dependent on it. The book would still be amazing without it. The plot had many twists and turns and Kelley Armstrong always kept you guessing.
Character(s): Maya is an extremely independent woman. In Darkest Powers, Chloe- while being awesome- starts out really timid and shy. Maya is not like that. She knows what to do and she knows how to do it and she will get it done her way and quickly. She likes taking responsibility and being the leader in a situation. She's almost a little too serious for me (just because I'm kind of a silly person) but I think she's perfect for the situation at hand. She keeps them all going.
Cover: Honestly? I actually really don't like the cover. Sorry, but I don't. I don't mind if you see some of a person or someone in the distance, but basically it's a plain cover with Maya on the front. No details no pretty embellishments. The font isn't even that cool.
Closing Thoughts: So in case you didn't know, this is probably my all time favorite series. Well... Darkest Powers was. I'm just excited for them to finally meet up with Chloe and Derek at some point. I'm giving this a three instead of a four probably unfairly. I have such high expectations for this series because I'm completely obsessed with the first three. So honestly, I should be giving this a four but I can't bring myself to. Definitely a must-read and it's really good. It just hasn't topped Chloe's story yet.
